The Antennae Galaxies: NGC 4038 & NGC 4039

The Antennae Galaxies: NGC 4038 & NGC 4039

The Antennae Galaxies: NGC 4038 & NGC 4039. Located about 55 million light-years away these two galaxies are undergoing collision, which began about 900 million years ago. In around 400 million years the two cores -- shown here as bright lobes -- will merge and one larger, likely elliptical galaxy will be the result. This is predicted to be our fate in some 4 billion years when the much larger and quickly approaching Andromeda Galaxy and our own Milky Way collide. Hang on.

Using both ESA/ESO/NASA provided software and Photoshop I combined four B&W Hubble Telescope images (courtesy NASA and HLA) taken with Red, Green, Blue, and & Hydrogen-Alpha filters to create this image.
